109th Mixed Brigade

The 109th Mixed Brigade ((スペイン語:109.ª Brigada Mixta)),〔(SBHAC – Brigadas Mixtas del Ejército Popular, 109ª Brigada Mixta )〕〔Carlos Engel, ''Historia de las Brigadas Mixtas del E. P. de la República'', 1999〕 was a mixed brigade of the Spanish Republican Army in the Spanish Civil War. It was formed in the spring of 1937 in Utiel with four battalions, the 433,〔(109 Brigada Mixta, Batallón Nº 433.
This ill-fated brigade operated mostly in Extremadura and was annihilated in the Battle of Mérida pocket in 1938.〔(José Vázquez Pedreño, ''109 Brigada Mixta, Ejército Popular Republicano'' )〕 Its survivors ended up in Francoist concentration camps, where some of them would be shot.〔
== History ==
The 109th Mixed Brigade was established on 21 March 1937 in Utiel.〔Carlos Engel, ''Historia de las Brigadas Mixtas del Ejército Popular de la República''. Madrid, Almena, 1999, pp. 99-100〕 The first commander of the unit was Infantry Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Gil Otero, who had been Commander of the ''16th Albuera Regiment'' in Lleida at the time of the 1936 coup of the pro-Fascist generals.
The commissar of the unit was Ernesto Herrero Zalagán who belonged to the Unified Socialist Youth.〔
Very soon Gil Otero was transferred to the Levantine Army ''(Ejército de Levante)'' and was replaced as leader of the unit by Infantry Commander Luis Pedreño Ramírez, who had been living in prematurely retirement in Alcoi owing to the "Azaña Law".〔The so-called ''"Ley Azaña"''; part of the reforms of the armed forces introduced in 1931 by Republican Minister of War Manuel Azaña in order to modernize the Spanish Military and cut down the expenses of the state in the aftermath of the Great Depression. Ignacio Hidalgo de Cisneros, ''Cambio de Rumbo'', Ed. Ikusager, Vitoria 2001, pg. 273〕
